Chonky Yarn Mittens and Beret Knitting Pattern
YOU WILL NEED
- 1 ball of Snag yarn in your favourite colour
- 2 x 12 mm circular needles on 20cm cable, or 1 set of 12mm dpns for mittens. 1x 12mmcircular needle on 40cm cable for beret, or knit on 2 circulars as for mittens.
- Large cable needle
- Scrap yarn in contrasting colour to make markers and tie off held stitches

- Psso – pass the slipped stitch over ( a way to dec by 1 st that makes a left slanting dec)
- K2tog = knit 2 stitches together as though 1, to dec by 1 sts that makes a right slanting dec
- Kwise – knitwise
- Pwise – purlwise
- Cf4 – put 2 sts on cable needle in front of work, k next 2 sts on the working needle, then k thetwo in front on the cable needle to make a front twist
- Cb4 – put 2 sts on cable needle at the back of the work, k next 2 sts on the working needle then k 2 st at the back on the cable needle to make a back twist
CABLE PATTERN – HORSESHOE CABLE
Worked over 8 rnds, 7 rnds are K, 8th rnd is cf4, cb4 to complete one full cable pattern.
MITTENS
CO 16 sts and join in the rnd. Divide between 2 circular needles (8sts on each) or dpns.
1x1 rib for as far as you’d like the mitt to go up your wrist, about 4inches is good and cosy (8 rnds).
INCREASE STS FOR HAND
P1, kfb, k4, kfb, p1, kfb, knit to last sts, kfb. (20sts, 10 across each needle)
Work 5 rnds of P1,k8,p1, knit to end.
Next work for left or right mitten
SHAPE THUMB FOR LEFT MITTEN
Rnd 7: m1 (pick up the yarn between stitches and knit into this loop), PM, p1,k8,p1, K to end, PM,m1. (22 sts, with 2 new sts between the markers)
Rnd 8: k1, SM, p1,k8,p1, knit to marker, SM, k1.
Rnd 9: k1, m1, SM, p1, k8, p1, knit to marker, SM, k1, m1. (24 sts with 4 sts between the markers)
Rnd 10: k2, SM, p1, K8, P1, Knit to marker, SM, k2.
Rnd 11: Slip sts before marker onto scrap yarn, p1, cable pattern (cf4, cb4), p1, knit to marker,slip remaining sts onto the same scrap of yarn and tie ends in a bow to keep thumb stitches towork later.
SHAPE THUMB FOR RIGHT MITTEN
Rnd 7: P1, k8, p1, PM, m1, m1, PM, k to end. (22 sts with 2 new sts between the markers)
Rnd8: p1, k8, p1, SM, k1, k1, SM, k to end.
Rnd 9: P1, k8, p1, SM, m1, k1, k1, m1, SM, k to end. (24 sts with 4 sts between the markers)
Rnd 10: p1, k8, p1, SM, k2, k2, SM, k to end.
Rnd 11: P1, cable pattern (cf4, cb4), p1, remove marker and slip 2 sts onto scrap yarn. Slip next 2sts onto the same scrap yarn and tie in a bow to retain, remove marker and knit to end.
BODY OF THE MITTEN
With thumb sts secured on scrap yarn or st holder, you should now have 20 sts divided acrosstwo circular needles.
P1, k8,p1, knit to end. This is rnd 1 of your next cable pattern (8 rnds with cable pattern in thelast rnd)
Rep a full cable pattern repeat of 8 rnds and try the mitten on. If the body of the mitten hasreached the top of your pinky finger, you may move on to finishing the mitten top. If your pinkyis still visible, continue in pattern and test after each round. 4 rnds will add another inch. Onceyour pinky is snuggled in the mitten top, move on to finishing the mitten top.
FINISHING OF THE MITTEN TOP
Rnd1: Sl1, k1, psso, k6, k2tog, sl1,k1, psso, knit to last 2 sts, k2tog. (16 sts rem)
Rnd2: Knit to end.
Rnd 3: Sl1, k1, psso, k4, k2tog, sl1,k1,psso, knit to last 2 sts, k2tog. (12 sts rem)
Rnd 4: Knit to end
Rnd 5: Sl1, k1, psso, k2tog, k2tog, sl1,k1,psso, k2tog, k2tog (6 sts rem)
Cut thread and pass through the 6 sts then weave in the end.
FINISH THUMB
Pick up two stitches to close around the thumb hole and add first two held stitches from scrap yarn onto first needle.
On second needle, slip remaining 2 sts onto needle and pick up another two to fully encircle thethumb hole. You should now have 8 sts across two circular needles.
Knit rnds until the piece reaches the top of your thumb. (4 rnds equals an inch)
Last rnd: k2tog to end (4 sts). Cut yarn and using a yarn needles, threat the yarn through theopen 4 sts pulling tight to completely close. Weave in the end.
BERET
Co 40 sts and divide across 2 circular needles. Join in the rnd. 20on each circular
Knit 1x1 rib for 3 rnds.
BERET BODY
Rnd 1: (K1, Kfb) rep to end (60 sts)
Rnd 2: K8, p7,k8,p7,k8,p7,k8,p7
Rep rnd 2, 6 more times.
Cable rnd: Cf4,cb4, p7, cf4, cb4, p7, cf4, cb4, p7, cf4, cb4, p7
FINISHING BERET
Rnd 1: (K8,p2tog, p3, p2tog) rep 3 more times. (52 sts rem)
Rnd 2: (K8, p5) rep 3 more times.
Rnd 3: (K8, p2tog, p1, p2tog) rep 3 times (44 sts rem)
Rnd 4: (K8, p3) rep 3 times
Rnd 5: (K8, sl 1 purlwise, p2tog, psso) rep more 3 times (36 sts rem)
Rnd 6: (K8, p1) rep 3 more times
Rnd 7: (K8, p1) rep 3 more times
Rnd 8 (cable rnd): (Cf4, cb4, p1) rep 3 more times
